Professional Bio
Donald Brady, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Public Health, Department of Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
A graduate of VUSM, he did his internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt. In 1993, he joined the faculty at Emory University and helped establish the internal medicine residency's primary care track, serving as director for a decade. Dr. Brady returned to Vanderbilt in 2007 as Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education. In 2013, he became Senior Associate Dean for GME and Continuing Professional Development and, in 2016 assumed the additional title of Senior Vice President for Educational Affairs. He was promoted in 2019 to the roles of VUMC's Executive Vice President for Educational Affairs and VUSM's Senior Associate Dean of Health Sciences Education. In 2023, his VUSM role transitioned to that of Executive Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, a position unifying oversight of both educational and faculty affairs.
From 2010-2012, Dr. Bardy served as a Special Advisor to Singapore's National University Hospital System and National Healthcare Group Residency Programs. One of six principal investigators for the Macy Foundation's Regional Conferences on Innovations in Graduate Medical Education, he led the southern region conference hosted by Vanderbilt in February 2016. In 2015, he organized the first regional faculty development course co-sponsored by ACGME and a sponsoring institution. Dr. Brady's main interests are in medical education, doctor-patient communication, and physician wellness. He has received numerous teaching awards, including being a finalist for the Parker Palmer Courage To Lead Award in 2013 and 2016. Under his stewardship, VUMC received the DeWitt C. Baldwin, Jr. Award, co-sponsored by ACGME and the Gold Foundation, recognizing sponsoring institutions exemplary in fostering a respectful, supportive environment for medical education and the delivery of patient care. Dr. Brady currently serves on ACGME's Diversity and Inclusion Committee and previously served on the ACGME Board of Directors. He served as the co-facilitator of the 2018 ACGME Symposium on Physician Wellbeing.
For Vanderbilt University, he has served as Chair of the Faculty Senate and co-chair of the Chancellor's Strategic Planning Committee on Mental Health and Wellbeing. In the past, he has served as President and Chair of the Board of Directors for the Academy on Communication in Healthcare and served on the AAMC-GRA's Steering Committee, serving as Chair in 2014.
Dr. Bardy regularly presents nationally on a variety of topics, including aligning the values and needs of residents with institutional priorities and community needs, wellness, overcoming unconscious bias, and other topics in medical education. He was the PI for VUMC's 5-year, $1.8 million dollar "Reimagining Residency" grant from the American Medical Association from 2019-2021 and continues now as a co-PI.
