Basic Science Faculty

The generation and dissemination of new knowledge to improve our understanding of human health and disease remains a core mission of the medical center and the Department of Medicine. As part of our ongoing commitment to recruit and retain the best in basic and translational research, the department is fortunate to have an outstanding cadre of Basic Science tenure track faculty. The following fact sheet highlights this critical group of faculty, their contributions and the support they have received from external and internal sources. (last updated March 2018).

  • Sixty-two Ph.D. faculty members in the Department of Medicine are on the Basic Science track. The distribution of Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, and Professors is 51.6%, 22.6%, and 25.8%, respectively. 
  • Six of 16 professors on the Basic Science Track in the DOM hold endowed chairs or directorships and an additional professor holds an Ingram Professorship.
  • On average, faculty members on the Basic Science Track fund 70% of their salary through federal grants from the National Institutes of Health or the Veterans Administration.
  • Faculty members on the Basic Science Track receive over $2.5 mil in academic program support per year from the DOM in addition to support from Centers, Institutes and Cores.
  • Twenty members (one-third) of the Basic Science Track in the DOM teach in medical school or graduate school courses. Average salary support for teaching is seven percent.
  • Four faculty members on the Basic Science Track in the DOM serve as principal investigators of training grants.
  • Of 77 Ph.D. students training in laboratories in the DOM, 40 (52%) of these are training in the laboratories of Basic Science Track faculty members.
  • Assistant Professors on the Basic Science Track receive career development training through membership in the Neilson Society.
  • Each year the DOM supports the participation of women faculty on the Basic Science track in the AAMC Early Career Women Faculty Seminar and the Mid-Career Women Faculty Leadership Development Seminar.
