Fellows may select from Clinical/Clinical Educator, Clinical Research, or Basic Science Research tracks 

  • Track selection does NOT need to be declared at the time of ERAS Application

Rotations: 3 weeks each

  • AKI Consult Service (electrolyte issues, acute renal failure, plasmapharesis)
    • 2 renal fellows +/- Internal medicine residents and medical students
    • Rotation ends at 12:00 PM 
  • ESRD Service (chronic dialysis) 
    • 1 renal fellow, 1 nurse practitioner
    • Rotation ends at 12:00 PM
  • Afternoon Fellow 
    • Sees all AKI and ESRD consults from 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM
  • Renal transplant service 
    • 1-2 renal transplant fellows, 1 nurse practitioner +/- Internal Medicine residents and medical students
  • VA Consult service (AKI + ESRD) 
    • 1 renal fellow 
  • Ambulatory Rotation {3 weeks per semester; weekends off) 
    • Outpatient dialysis clinic
    • Hypertension clinic
    • Chronic kidney disease clinic
    • Palliative care and communication skills exposure
    • Dialysis access clinic
  • Elective (3 weeks per semester; weekends off) 
    • Renal Pathology (required during 1st year) 
    • lnterventional Radiology
    • Pediatrics 

Other Information

  • Continuity clinics
    • ½ day per week of continuity clinic throughout the year
    • ½ day per week of transplant clinic for ½ the year 
  • Weekday call (home call) 
    • Typically 1 day a week 1st year and 2 days per month 2nd year (if clinical track)
    • 6:00 PM to 7:00 AM 
  • Weekend call (home call) 
    • Variable, but usually 1 full weekend call and 1 ½ weekend call per month
  • Vacation: 15 weekdays, not including weekends, to be taken during elective/ambulatory blocks 
  • Central line placement:
    • Emergent lines placed by ED/ICU 
    • Anesthesia is available for back-up if needed for challenging lines on the floor
  • Clinical Track/Clinician Educator Track timeline
    • 1st year: usual clinical responsibilities, including 1-2 half-days of clinic/week
    • 2nd year: 6 months research time (highly protected with opportunity for structured projects) + 6 months of clinical responsibilities.  Also includes 1-2 half-days of clinic/week
  • Research Track timeline (clinical vs basic science)
    • 1st year: usual clinical responsibilities , including 1 half-day of clinic/week 
    • 2nd-3rd year: protected research time; option to do MSCI or MPH
