Spyros Kalams, M.D. is as Associate Professor Medicine within the Department of Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Associate Professor of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Kalams completed an internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Medical Center in Boston, and an Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. His laboratory studies cellular immune responses to pathogens, including HIV, influenza, and M. tuberculosis, and immune responses to HIV, influenza, and SARS CoV-2 vaccines. He is the Director of the Laboratory Science Core of the Tennessee Center for AIDS Research, co-Principal Investigator of the Vanderbilt HIV Clinical Trials Unit, and the Director of the Vanderbilt HIV Vaccine Clinical Research Site. At the start of the SARS CoV-2 epidemic, the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) became part of the Coronavirus Prevention Network (CoVPN), which evaluates vaccines and treatment strategies for protection against SARS CoV-2 infection. In 2020 Dr. Kalams became the Vanderbilt Site principal investigator of the first CoVPN phase III vaccine trial (Moderna vaccine). His recent work has evaluated immune responses to influenza and SARS CoV-2 vaccination in immune compromised populations, including individuals with stem cell or solid organ transplantation.
