Professional Bio

Ciara Shaver, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the Department of Medicine, Division of Allergy, Pulmonary, and Critical Care Medicine. Her growing basic and translational research program centers on mechanisms of acute lung injury with an emphasis on inflammation during critical illness and after lung transplantation.
 
In her research, Dr. Shaver uses animal models of pneumonia and transplant-related ischemic injury, and uses ex vivo isolated and perfused human lungs for mechanistic testing. She is interested in the injurious effects of cell-free hemoglobin in the lung. Dr. Shaver also directs lung transplant research at VUMC and enjoys career/peer mentorship for physician scientists.
