Professional Bio

Fabien Maldonado, MD, is a Professor of Medicine and Thoracic Surgery in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His research interests include quantitative imaging on computed tomography for lung cancer, novel minimally invasive diagnostic techniques for lung cancer and pleural diseases. He is also involved in many educational efforts in the field of Interventional Pulmonology.

Dr. Maldonado received his MD from the University of Dijon, in France and completed his internal medicine residency at Western Reserve Care System-Forum Health in Youngstown, Ohio. He went on to complete a pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Maldonado pursued six months of advanced training in interventional pulmonology in Marseilles, France, under the mentorship of Pr. Philippe Astoul and Hervé Dutau, both internationally recognized experts in the field. He also completed the Center for Translational Science Activities (CTSA) Postdoctoral Certificate Program at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. During his time at Mayo Clinic, he served as the Co-Program Director for the Interventional Pulmonology Fellowship.

Dr. Maldonado has received numerous awards, including a OneBreath Clinical Research in Lung Cancer award, Teacher of the Year from the Mayo Fellows Association, and a Burgher Endowed Fellowship award. On the clinician educator track, Dr. Maldonado’s clinical areas of expertise include interventional pulmonology, lung cancer, and pleural diseases. His research interests include novel imaging techniques for non-invasive characterization of lung cancer and pleural disease research. He has spoken about his research at national and international academic conferences and has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.
