Professional Bio

Jonathan Casey, MD, MSCI is a physician-scientist and clinical researcher with an appointment as an Assistant Professor for the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary, and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

He received his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, followed by internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Casey was selected as a Chief Medical Resident and spent two years as an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He joined Vanderbilt in 2015 as a fellow in pulmonary and critical care medicine. During this period, Dr. Casey worked under the mentorship of Drs. Matthew Semler, Todd Rice, and Gordon Bernard, developing and leading a series of clinical trials of respiratory support for critically ill adults, and earned a Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation. He joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2019.

Dr. Casey’s research focuses on the comparative effectiveness of standard-of-care interventions currently in use in the intensive care unit, with an emphasis on “pragmatic” clinical trial design, where trials are conducted within the framework of routine clinical care. His work has been published in journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Respiratory Medicine, and Annals of ATS. He has been recognized with numerous awards for teaching and clinical research at the resident, fellow, and faculty level, and he is supported with grant funding from the NIH.
