Research Description
Obesity is an important risk factor for asthma in the United States. Previous studies strongly suggest that obese persons with asthma have decreased responsiveness to conventional asthma therapy compared with non-obese persons with asthma, imploring new therapeutic approaches for asthma in the setting of obesity. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonist that is currently being used for the treatment of type-2 diabetes has inhibitory effects of both the early innate and adaptive allergic immune responses. We focused on mechanisms of asthma exacerbation in obesity and hypothesize that GLP-1R signaling is a negative regulator of both innate and adaptive immune responses in aeroallergen-induced asthma model with high-fat diet-induced obesity or polygenic obese mice. Our findings may provide a new therapeutic strategy for uncontrolled asthma with obesity.
