Benjamin Shoemaker, MD, MSCI

Associate Professor of Medicine

Division of Cardiovascular Medicine
Benjamin Shoemaker
Professional Bio
Benjamin Shoemaker, MD, MSCI, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is an adult cardiac electrophysiologist and physician scientist with a clinical and research program focused on the genetics of cardiac arrhythmias, with an emphasis on atrial fibrillation (AFib). Dr. Shoemaker is working to understand the natural history and clinical phenotype of unique clinical and genetic subgroups of patients with early-onset AFib. Examples include patients with rare pathogenic variants in cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia genes, high polygenic risk for AFib, or unique clinical risk factors such as patients with a high BMI or endurance athletes. The ultimate goal of his research program is to develop precision medicine approaches and targeted therapies. Dr. Shoemaker started the Vanderbilt Atrial Fibrillation Precision Medicine Clinic to support Vanderbilt's clinical mission and conduct research studies. His current research includes NIH and AHA-funded clinical trials and observational patient registries for early-onset and familial atrial fibrillation.
