Professional Bio
C. Henrique Serezani, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, and an Associate Professor of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at Vanderbilt. He is the Associate Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine, Associate Director of the Vanderbilt Center for Immunobiology, and co-director of the Initiative to Maximize Student Diversity and Development (IMSD).
He completed his PhD at the University of Sao Paulo and the University of Michigan and did his postdoctoral studies at the University of Michigan. From 2012-2016, he was an Assistant Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine.
Dr. Serezani has published over 90 papers in reputed journals and his lab has been continuously funded for almost two decades. The Serezani lab investigates the influence of phagocytes on tissue injury during systemic (sepsis) and localized infections (skin and lung) in individuals with and without immune deficiencies and those suffering from chronic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes.
His lab currently focuses on understanding the role of lipid mediators in phagocyte antimicrobial effector function and using host-derived drug repurposing approaches to treat antibiotic-resistant pathogens. The Serezani lab investigates the intersection between immunometabolism and epigenetic modifications involved in exaggerated inflammatory responses that could lead to enhanced susceptibility to infections during preexisting conditions.
