Professional Bio
Christianne Roumie, MD, MPH, is a Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Public Health within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She accepted a faculty appointment at Vanderbilt as a physician scientist to conduct health services research in the areas of cardiovascular prevention and chronic illness care and improvement. Dr. Roumie’s research has focused on the design and execution of interventions to improve cardiovascular risk factors among patients and ultimately lead to decreases in cardiovascular morbidity. She has spent many years understanding population-based approaches, including observational epidemiology in caring for patients with cardiovascular disease. Her work is focused at the intersection of clinical epidemiology, patient outcomes, and dissemination science among patients with hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. She has become a clinical leader in the complex interactions between cardiovascular disease, risk factor control, and appropriate medication utilization. A major focus of her work has been in the development and implementation of a research portfolio that evaluates appropriate medication utilization as a barrier to optimal patient outcomes and as risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Dr. Roumie has developed a national and international reputation for her work in the field of medication prescribing and cardiovascular epidemiology and improvement. She was an invited speaker at meetings of national organizations to present her research in pharmacoepidemiology and cardiovascular risk factor management, including platform presentations at American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, and the Society of General Internal Medicine. She has been invited to participate in multiple expert committees on appropriate medication prescribing, including the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Diabetes Multi-Center Research Consortium Executive Committee and the Veterans Health Administration Geriatrics Pharmacy taskforce on appropriate prescribing, and serves as a member of the Council of Quality and Outcomes Research for the American Heart Association. She has participated as a reviewer for the International Scientific abstracts for the American Stroke Association and is a standing member (voting) and Chair of the Food and Drug Administration's Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee (NDAC). She has served as an external examiner for a PhD dissertation defense internationally. A teacher and mentor, Dr. Roumie serves as the Deputy Director of the Nashville VA medical center Quality Scholars Fellowship Program. She provides mentorship to fellows training in quality improvement and health services research. She serves as a primary mentor to junior faculty and fellows in multiple disciplines, including medicine, surgery, and pediatrics. She is the PI of the T32 program in Health Services research and Implementation Science and the PI of the Learning Health System K12 Program. In 2019 she was presented with the Grant Liddle Award in Research Mentorship.
