Dmytro Kryshtal, PhD

Research Assistant Professor of Medicine

Division of Genetic Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology
Dmytro Kryshtal
Professional Bio
Dmytro O. Kryshtal, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Genetic Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology, Department of Medicine, and a member of the Vanderbilt Center for Arrhythmia Research and Therapeutics (VanCART) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. After earning his BS in Molecular Physics from Taras Shevchenko National University, and his PhD in Biophysics (2008) from Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology in Kyiv, Ukraine, he moved to Nashville for his postdoctoral training at VUMC in 2009, later joining VanCART as a junior faculty. Dr. Kryshtal’s research is focused on studying various cellular mechanisms responsible for the development of cardiac arrhythmias, with a particular interest in intracellular calcium cycling and functioning of calcium release channels. He has authored or co-authored 25 peer-reviewed manuscripts, some of them in high-impact journals such as Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, and Circulation Research, and is regularly presenting his work at national and international academic conferences, including the American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions, the Biophysical Society annual meetings and the Gordon’s Research Conferences. His current primary project studying the role of non-selective large capacitance calcium- and ATP-activated ion channels, pannexins, in the development of potentially lethal ventricular arrhythmias represents a novel concept that may reveal a new mechanism of arrhythmia triggering in cardiac pathologies associated with diastolic Ca release and can potentially provide a new target for their therapeutic treatment.
