Francis Miller, MD, is a Professor and physician-scientist investigator in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
He obtained his medical degree from the University of Iowa and completed an internal medicine residency at UT Southwestern in Dallas before returning to Iowa for a cardiology fellowship. He remained at the University of Iowa as a faculty member, rising through the ranks to professor before relocating to Duke University and the Durham VA in 2016 as a tenured Professor of Medicine. In 2020, Dr. Miller became the Chief of Cardiology at the Salisbury VA Medical Center and a professor at Wake Forest University.
Dr. Miller has served on several national committees, including as a Member of the FASEB Board of Directors, Committee Chair for the Society for Redox Biology and Medicine, Chair of an Oversight Advisory Committee for the AHA, and President of the American Federation for Medical Research. He has contributed to several editorial boards and study sections and is a Deputy Editor for Circulation Research.
The central goal of Dr. Miller's research is to understand the molecular and cellular role of reactive oxygen species in cardiovascular disease. As a practicing cardiologist, he strives to unite findings in the research lab with human disease. His current research program is identifying: the role of NADPH oxidases in cardiovascular health and disease; synthetic RNA ligands as novel therapies. He has been funded by the NIH, DOD, VA, AHA, and NSF. Dr. Miller is an avid supporter of physician-scientists and has received awards for housestaff teaching and mentorship of graduate students.
