Professional Bio
George E. Nelson, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
He completed internal medicine residency at VUMC and infectious diseases fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He served as Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in the Respiratory Diseases Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with focus on antibiotic use, bacterial infections, and outbreak investigations.
Dr. Nelson’s major scientific interest focuses on antimicrobial resistance and appropriate antibiotic utilization. He serves as the Director of Vanderbilt Antimicrobial Stewardship Program which was recently named a Center of Excellence by the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Additionally, he serves as Associate Epidemiologist for Vanderbilt University Hospital.
He has served on the antimicrobial stewardship advisory committee for The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and continues to participate on regional collaboratives and committees with the Tennessee Department of Health on antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention topics. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he supported statewide response as a member of the Governor’s COVID-19 Response Task Force Subcommittee to Unified Command.
Dr. Nelson has co-authored chapters in SHEA antimicrobial stewardship textbook and the leading infectious diseases text, Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases. He has been and invited speak locally and nationally and co-authored more than 40 publications appearing in Clinical Infectious Diseases, Emerging Infectious Diseases, The Journal of the American Medical Association, Vaccine, Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, and The Lancet Global Health among others. He is currently conducting studies on antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance to improve patient outcomes and reduce patient harms, including antimicrobial adverse events and toxicities.
He attends clinically on inpatient infectious diseases consult services and sees patients in the general infectious diseases outpatient clinic.
