Professional Bio
Heidi J. Silver, PhD, is a Research Professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and a Health Scientist in the Veterans Affairs Department of Research.
Dr. Silver's research focuses on designing diet intervention trials that modify energy intake and the amounts and types of macronutrients consumed to improve energy balance, body composition, inflammatory state, and insulin sensitivity for cardiometabolic disease risk reduction. In addition, she has collaborated on the development of imaging protocols to differentiate ectopic fat in organs and tissues and determine its role in cardiometabolic disease risk. Dr. Silver established and is the director of the Vanderbilt Diet, Body Composition, and Human Metabolism Core. In 2020, she was selected for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Excellence in Research Practice Award.
She has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles, taught several academic courses, and created several webinars for dietitians, nurses and physicians. Dr. Silver is an ad-hoc reviewer for 21 journals, has been invited to speak at more than 75 national meetings, and has been invited to present lectures or workshops in nine different countries.
Dr. Silver achieved her PhD in nutrition from Florida International University where she was honored with Doctoral Recognition of the Year and Outstanding Doctoral Scholarship Awards. Currently, she is a member of a committee of the National Academies for Science, Engineering, and Medicine to revise and update the Dietary Reference Intakes formulas and recommendations for Energy.
