Holly Algood, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine within the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology and an affiliation with the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Research Microbiologist. She received her bachelor's degree from Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio and PhD from the University of Pittsburgh. She worked at Vanderbilt University as a Research Fellow from 2004-2008. In 2008, Dr. Algood was recruited to the faculty at Vanderbilt University Medical Center as a Research Instructor. In 2011, her appointment was transferred to the tenure-track (basic scientist) as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. In 2018, she was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine with tenure. Dr. Algood's research program focuses on immunopathological responses to infections. Her research model has been chronic infection with Helicobacter pylori, but she is involved in studies on immune function and pathology during M. tuberculosis, F. tularensis, E. coli, and C. difficile. She has been consistently well-funded by the Department of Veteran's Affairs since 2009, including VA Merit Award (I01BX000915). Currently, she is also the co-PI on an R21 grant (R21AI163586) and co-I on several NIH funded studies including: P01CA116087, R01AI118932 and R01AI039657. The major theme of her research program is to identify immunological pathways which drive chronic pathology and understand the balance between antimicrobial and immunopathological activities of the immune system. Dr. Algood is active as an editor and manuscript reviewer for multiple peer-reviewed journals and contributes currently to the training through service on mentoring committees of more than 10 graduate students and fellows. She is a valued member of several Centers at VUMC including the Vanderbilt Center for Immunobiology, the Digestive Diseases Research Center, the Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center and the Center for Mucosal Inflammation and Cancer.
