Professional Bio
Holly M. Scott Algood, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a Research Microbiologist at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). She holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at Vanderbilt.
Dr. Algood received her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh where she trained under Dr. Joanne Flynn and investigated chemokines and their role in granuloma formation during M. tuberculosis infection. Since that time, she has expanded her research expertise in the realm of bacterial pathogenesis and mucosal immunology focusing on inflammation induced by chronic infection and its impact on carcinogenesis.
While a primary focus of Dr. Algood’s laboratory has been investigating this paradigm in the context of H. pylori infection, her laboratory collaborates on projects with many model systems including E.coli (UTIs), Group B Streptococcus, C. difficile, F. tularnesis and M. tuberculosis. Dr. Algood makes contributions to the research community both at the VA and at VUMC by serving as the Chair of the VA’s biosafety committee and as the PI/Director of a Department of Veterans Affairs-funded summer research program, which was designed to increase the diversity of future scientists and physician/scientists.
