Professional Bio
Italo Biaggioni, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He Biaggioni received his medical degree and completed Internal Medicine residency at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, in Peru. He came to Vanderbilt in 1984 for postdoctoral fellowship training in Clinical Pharmacology and was then recruited to the faculty. He has risen through the ranks and named Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology in 2002. Dr. Biaggioni has held several institutional leadership roles. He has been the Associate Director of the Clinical Research Center and left that position to form the Clinical Trials Center to provide support for faculty’s involvement in clinical research. He is currently the Director of the Autonomic Dysfunction Center, a multidisciplinary program dedicated to the evaluation and management of autonomic disorders, and the development of novel treatment approaches based on clinical research. The center has discovered four new genetic autonomic disorders, repurposed approved medications for new indications, and participated in the development of novel medications and devices for the treatment of these disorders. Dr. Biaggioni has an active research program focused on the interaction between neural (autonomic) metabolic (renin-angiotensin, insulin) and local (adenosine, nitric oxide) involved in cardiovascular regulation; in particular, how these interactions participate in the pathophysiology of hypertension and associated metabolic and neurological disorders. The David Robertson Professor of Autonomic Disorders, Dr. Biaggioni has had continued NIH funding for over 25 years that has resulted in over 335 peer-reviewed publications. He is an elected member of the Association of American Physicians, and was named a Distinguished Scientist by the American Heart Association. He also received the Irvine Page and Alva Bradley Lifetime Achievement Award by the Council on Hypertension. He has trained dozens of scientists that are now leaders in the field.
