Professional Bio
Ivan Robbins, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the DIvision of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He received his MD degree from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and completed his residency at Metrohealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. He then came to VUMC for a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and joined the faculty after completing his fellowship. He has spent the next 25 years studying pulmonary vascular disease. He established the Adult Pulmonary Vascular Center soon after joining the faculty and has been the Director of the Center since its inception. Dr. Robbins' research interests have focused on pulmonary vascular disease and include improving the categorization of pulmonary vascular disease. He has published articles describing the phenotypes of PH, particularly with regard to the metabolic syndrome, pulmonary hemodynamics, and latent pulmonary venous hypertension. He has participated numerous clinical trials evaluating new treatments for pulmonary arterial hypertension leading to the approval of multiple new therapies. In conjunction with cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Robbins established surgical the pulmonary endarterectomy program in 2009 allowing potentially curative treatment for patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, one of only three programs in the Southeast. In addition to his work with pulmonary vascular disease, Dr. Robbins has also been very involved with the Lung Transplant Program at Vanderbilt. He recently servedd as Interim Medical Director of the program, during which time the number of lung transplants doubled. He has been an invited speaker locally, nationally, and internationally at academic institutions and scientific meetings. He has authored or contributed to more than 100 publications. Dr. Robbins attends clinically on the inpatient lung transplant and pulmonary hypertension services and has outpatient clinics in which he sees both lung transplant and pulmonary hypertension patients.
