Professional Bio
Jennifer Gaddy, PhD is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Her research interests are focused on determining how bacteria interact with host cells and evade the immune system, with a special focus on perinatal pathogens such as Group B Streptococcus. In particular, her work has focuses on the role nutrition plays in the dynamic dialogue between host and pathogen.
Dr. Gaddy's recent work reveals that host cells exploit metal intoxication as an antimicrobial strategy to control invading pathogens. In response to this, pathogens deploy elegant strategies to circumnavigate metal toxicity within the vertebrate host. Her recent work also focuses on discovering the antimicrobial components within human breast milk in a collaborative project with Dr. Steven Townsend in the Vanderbilt University Department of Chemistry.
Dr. Gaddy employs numerous cutting-edge methods and tools in her research including molecular biology, biochemistry, animal models of infection, primary human tissue and cell culture, high resolution imaging modalities, and -omics approaches.
