Jennifer Noto, PhD

Research Associate Professor of Medicine

Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition
Jennifer Noto
Professional Bio
Jennifer Noto, PhD, is a Research Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Department of Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She received her BS in biology from the University of Mary Washington and her PhD in microbiology and immunology from the Virginia Commonwealth University. In graduate school, she studied the pathogenesis of Neisseria and mechanisms of iron acquisition as a target for vaccine development. Dr. Noto completed her postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Richard Peek, MD, at Vanderbilt University. Her postdoctoral research focused on mechanisms of Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric inflammation and cancer. During this time, she was extremely productive in her research pursuits and has significantly contributed to the research on 18 different publications, 10 of these as first author. Based on her findings, Dr. Noto was awarded a Nationals Research Service Award (F32) for postdoctoral fellows through the National Cancer Institute that funded her research for three years. Her research has been recognized nationally and internationally, collectively prompting numerous presentations at local, national, and international meetings as well as many high-impact publications. One of her recent publications in the Journal of Clinical Investigation demonstrated that iron depletion augments and accelerates the development of gastric cancer in animal models and humans within the context of H. pylori infection, which may enable physicians to focus therapeutic strategies and will have major implications on policies pertaining to H. pylori eradication. Dr. Noto is continuing to build upon this research, utilizing both animal models and human populations to address the interplay between environmental factors and microbial virulence determinants in H. pylori-induced gastric carcinogenesis.
