Professional Bio
Joao de Andrade, MD, MMHC, is a Professor of Medicine and currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer/Executive Medical Director of the Vanderbilt Lung Institute, as well as the Associate Director of the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary, and Critical Care Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. de Andrade was born and educated in Brazil, where he earned his medical degree from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Porto Alegre. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre/UFRGS, where he also served as chief medical resident. Dr. de Andrade moved to the United States in 1994, completing a second internal medicine residency at the University of Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital in 1997. He went on to complete a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), followed by additional research training through the NIH-funded UAB Clinical Research Training Program. Dr. de Andrade joined the UAB faculty in 2000 and rose to the rank of Professor of Medicine with tenure. There, he founded and led the UAB Interstitial Lung Disease Program, transforming it into a regional center of excellence for patient care and research. In 2013, he was appointed Director of the Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program, where he spearheaded a major expansion of the program and a comprehensive revision of its didactic curriculum. Dr. de Andrade held these roles until 2018, when he left UAB to join Vanderbilt University Medical Center. In 2022, he graduated with honors from the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management with a master’s degree in management of healthcare (MMHC). Dr. de Andrade’s academic career has been dedicated to building infrastructure that supports clinical and translational research in interstitial lung disease, with a focus on developing innovative strategies for clinical care.
