Professional Bio
Joseph Akamah, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
He earned his MD at the top of his class from University of Ghana Medical School, then went to the UK to train in surgery. Following that, Dr. Akamah moved to the U.S. to train in internal medicine and served as chief resident at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, and served as attending physician and assistant professor at Rush Medical College.
He continued as a fellow in cardiology before accepting a position as assistant professor at Meharry Medical College and trained at Vanderbilt University as an interventionalist. He was appointed director of Interventional Cardiology at Meharry and later accepted a Vanderbilt appointment as assistant professor, during which he was trained with the American College of Cardiology as an emerging faculty member.
Dr. Akamah holds an MPH in epidemiology and an MBA. He is a board-certified interventional cardiologist and holds certificates in Executive Education from Harvard in Business Innovations in Global Health Care and Global Clinical Scholars Research Training. He was Interventional Cardiology Item-Writing task force member for the ABIM.
With a true love of teaching, Dr. Akamah serves as a role model to many students, residents and fellows both in the U.S. and Ghana. He was chief of cardiology at the University of Ghana before becoming medical director of Interventional Cardiology and Adjunct Associate Professor at Meharry.
