Professional Bio
Kelly Cunningham Sponsler, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Public Health, Section of Hospital Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Sponsler's academic interests have focused on care transitions, specifically related to medication reconciliation and strategies to reduce readmissions. She has authored several reviews on best practices for care transitions and has spoken at regional and national meetings on related topics. Dr. Sponsler has held several notable leadership roles during her career at Vanderbilt. She was previously the director for faculty development for the Section of Hospital Medicine, and director for the Quality Improvement and Patient Safety courses for senior Vanderbilt medical students. From 2018-2020, she served as the medical director for the Vanderbilt Familiar Faces program, which aims to provide continuity across care settings for medically complex patients who experience frequent hospital utilization. She has additional expertise in clinical documentation best practices and was the physician lead for the VUMC Clinical Documentation and Coding Excellence program from 2016-2021. Currently, Dr. Sponsler is the executive medical director for the Hospital Medicine Clinical Service Center and does clinical work on direct care and teaching general medicine services and the medicine consult service at Vanderbilt hospital.
