Professional Bio
Lori Coburn, MD, is a physician-scientist in the area of gastrointestinal research and an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatoloty and Nutrition, Department of Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
She is a graduate of the Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas, where she graduated magna cum laude and went on to receive her MD from Harvard Medical School. She completed residency in Internal Medicine followed by a combined clinical and NIH T32-supported research fellowship in gastroenterology at VUMC. She was then recruited to join the faculty at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine as an Instructor in Medicine, then Assistant Professor, and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure.
Dr. Coburn was initially funded through the Vanderbilt Physician Scientist Development Program, then by a VA Career Development Award, followed by a VA Merit Review Award. She has also received funding from the American Cancer Society and the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. She continues to build her research program centered on gastrointestinal mucosal inflammation and inflammation-associated carcinogenesis.
Dr. Coburn is a staff physician at the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System in Nashville, where she does endoscopy and GI consults. She is the Associate Director of Research in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and Associate Director of the Academy of Investigators Program within the NIH-funded Vanderbilt Digestive Diseases Research Center. She also serves on the National Scientific Advisory Committee of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation.
