Mackenzie Barker
Interests

A native of Statesville, North Carolina, Mackenzie is the first in her family to pursue a career in medicine. She developed an early interest in global health and has remained engaged in service work throughout her training. She earned her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University, graduating with honors in molecular biology. She went to Eastern Virginia Medical School, where she was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Society, obtained her bilingual clinician certificate, and developed interests in evidence-based medicine, high-value care, and medical education. During her Med-Peds residency at Vanderbilt, Mackenzie completed the global health pathway through the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH). She also completed the EXCITE medical educator track and served as chief editor of the internal medicine handbook. Her clinical work has included caring for Spanish-speaking patients in both her continuity clinic and in the community, alongside continued involvement in global health initiatives abroad. Following residency, Mackenzie plans to pursue a career in combined pediatric and adult hospital medicine and to continue her global health efforts both locally and internationally. In her free time, she enjoys reading, music, spending time with friends, staying active in her church community, and outdoor adventure.
