Professional Bio
M. Blanca Piazuelo, MD, is a Research Associate Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
She earned her medical degree from Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia, and completed a Residency in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology at the same institution. In 2000, she joined Dr. Pelayo Correa’s research team at Louisiana State University as a fellow in gastric pathology. Dr. Piazuelo relocated to Vanderbilt in 2005 to join the division’s research efforts in H. pylori-associated disease, and has gained expertise in the morphological interpretation of animal models of gastrointestinal disease under the mentorship of Dr. Kay Washington.
Dr. Piazuelo’s main research interest is the precancerous process of the human stomach, primarily caused by H. pylori infection. She serves as associate director of the tissue morphology subcore at the Vanderbilt Digestive Diseases Research Center and collaborates with multiple investigators at Vanderbilt and around the world in a variety of research projects related to inflammation and carcinogenesis of the gastrointestinal tract in humans and in animal models. Dr. Piazuelo has been invited as a speaker at national and international scientific meetings and has coauthored more than 160 peer-reviewed publications.
