Professional Bio
Martha Leonard, MD, is a Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a Veterans Healthcare Administration staff physician at Tennessee Valley Healthcare System in Nashville.
She completed her MD at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. She then completed her internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She started her career as an Internal Medicine Hospitalist at St. Thomas West Hospital in 2002 and later had a Primary Care Practice at St. Thomas Medical Group, prior to her transition to work in palliative care at Alive Hospice.
In 2013, she joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University Medical Center serving as a Palliative Care Attending, working primarily at the Nashville VA Campus of the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS). She obtained a graduate xertificate in healthcare ethics from the National Center for Ethics in Healthcare in 2018 and is certified as a Healthcare Ethics Consultant through the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities.
Dr. Leonard serves as subject matter expert for TVHS in the Life Sustaining Treatment Decisions Initiative and the Informed Consent for Long Term Opioid Therapy for Pain handbooks. She also serves as co-chair for the Life Sustaining Treatment Decisions Committee and as a Clinical Ethics Consultant at Tennessee Valley Healthcare System.
