Matthew Stier, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor of Medicine

Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
Matthew Stier
Professional Bio
Matthew Stier, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is a physician-scientist with a clinical and research focus on immunologic and metabolic dysfunction in critical illness syndromes including sepsis and ARDS. Dr. Stier earned his MD and PhD in the lab of Dr. Stokes Peebles through the Medical Scientist Training Program at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine as part of the ABIM Research Track and went on to fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Vanderbilt with postdoctoral research in the lab of Dr. Jeffrey Rathmell. Dr. Stier’s research focuses on immunology and metabolism in critical illness, employing human-centric, translational approaches rooted in the use of ICU biospecimens. His lab integrates benchtop and computational methods with active investigations into CD4 and CD8 T-cell fitness and the temporal evolution of immune responses during critical illness. He is also developing innovative strategies to expand the scope of mechanistic studies in humans with the goal of better defining the pathophysiology of critical illness. His work has been supported by the NHLBI T32 program and the Vanderbilt Human Immunology Discovery Initiative and is currently funded by a KL2 Career Development Award. Dr. Stier has received numerous awards for his research and teaching, including the Elliot V. Newman, MD Award for Physician-Scientists, the Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies (FoCIS) Research Award, and the Roger Des Prez Award for Teaching Excellence in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He is an active member of the American Thoracic Society, Shock Society, and Society of Leukocyte Biology. In addition to his research, Dr. Stier is committed to education and mentoring and practices clinically as a critical care physician.
