Professional Bio
Mazen Khalil, MD, is an interventional cardiologist specializing in the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD), heart failure and peripheral arterial disease. As faculty in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Dr. Khalil has a special research interest in studying the role of inflammation in atherosclerosis. He has been involved in multiple projects studying proteins involved in the atherosclerotic process, and has studied the role of genetically engineered hematopoietic stem cells in various mouse models. In addition to his basic science interests, Dr. Khalil has interest in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement. His clinical interests include improving the outcomes of coronary artery disease patients, and he believes that prevention plays a key role in reducing the incidence of CAD. Dr. Khalil is an advocate of lifestyle modifications, including healthy diet and exercise to decrease the incidence of CAD, and to slow the progression of atherosclerosis in patients with CAD. Dr. Khalil earned his medical degree from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, and completed an Internal Medicine residency at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland. He subsequently completed Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Cardiology fellowships at Emory University in Atlanta. He is a member of the Quality Improvement Committee of the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography Interventions.
