Professional Bio
Melissa F. Wellons, MD, MHS, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
She spent over 11 years at Duke University where she obtained her undergraduate, medical, and masters degrees. She then spent 11 years at the University of Alabama, Birmingham where she was chief resident in internal medicine and on faculty in the divisions of preventive medicine, medical endocrinology and reproductive endocrinology. She joined the faculty at Vanderbilt in 2012.
Dr. Wellons' clinical practice and her research both focus on women’s health and cardiometabolic health. She has led grants and served in leadership roles with the NIH/NHLBI-funded Coronary Artery Disease Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) longitudinal study for almost 20 years. This work includes topics such as the impact of obesity, insulin resistance, and lipid disorders on reproductive health, as well as their relationship with polycystic ovary syndrome.
Dr. Wellons is a dedicated educator. She attends with endocrine and cardiology fellows in clinic and in the hospital and facilitates endocrinology case-based sessions with first year VUSM students.
