Michelle Ormseth, MD, MSCI

Associate Professor of Medicine

Division of Rheumatology and Immunology
Michelle Ormseth
Professional Bio
Michelle Ormseth, MD, MSCI, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology, Department of Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She is a physician-scientist with research interest in 1) cardiovascular disease in patients with rheumatic diseases and 2) small RNAs as biomarkers and modifiers of disease in patients with rheumatic diseases. In the area of cardiovascular disease Dr. Ormseth's work has focused on non-traditional risk factors in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in clinical and translational studies. She also conducts investigator-initiated interventional clinical trials designed to repurpose drugs and test novel drugs to treat RA and to reduce the associated cardiovascular risk associated with RA. In the area of small RNAs, she has leveraged machine learning methodologies to develop sRNA panels for RA/ SLE classification and atherosclerosis risk assessments. Some of her current work includes identifying microbial sRNAs in human plasma in patients with RA and SLE and determining their significance and potential impact on disease. Dr. Ormseth's lab is funded by the VA Office of Research and Development, National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, Alpha Omicron Pi, and generous donations from local families interested in arthritis research.
