Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition
Muhammad Aslam
Professional Bio
Muhammad Aslam, MD, is a Research Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from Nishtar Medical College Multan, Pakistan then began his research career in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition within the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Muhammad's expertise belongs to the study of upper gastrointestinal motility and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its complications. He has contributed to the pioneering research on 1) The effects of aging on the airway protection reflexes during bolus and gastrointestinal refluxate transit, 2) The effects of esophageal regional distension on the airway protection reflexes, 3) Isolation of esophageal microvascular endothelium and mechanisms of inflammatory activation, and 4) Validation studies for multichannel impedance-pH monitoring, the current gold standard test for diagnosing GERD. He has expanded his research to study the mechanical and metabolic effects of obesity on GERD and its complications since joining VUMC. His publications on different techniques for measuring body fat content and distribution and the effects of obesity and weight loss on gastroesophageal pressure dynamics and systemic inflammation are well-recognized. Currently, he is working on defining obesity-associated biological pathways involved in the pathophysiology of GERD and its complications.
