Professional Bio
Paula Hurley, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She also has a secondary appointment in the Department of Urology and is a member of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.
Dr. Hurley earned her undergraduate degree in biology from Lawrence University, and then taught high school biology in Louisiana through Teach for America. She earned her PhD in cancer biology from the University of Chicago, and then continued her training as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Hurley was then promoted to a faculty member in the Department of Urology at Johns Hopkins. In 2019, she moved her laboratory to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she is the co-leader of VHOPP and VIPR and serves on several additional committees.
Dr. Hurley's research focuses on identifying both cancer cell-intrinsic and tumor microenvironmental genetic and molecular pathways that promote lethal prostate cancer and cause therapy resistance. Ultimately, the goal of her research is to reduce the death and suffering caused by prostate cancer. She has obtained governmental, university, and private foundation grants to support her research and has published her findings in high impact journals. She has successfully mentored several trainees and has established multi-disciplinary collaborations.
