Ruth King Scoville Chair in Medicine

Richard Breyer
Professional Bio
Richard M. Breyer, PhD, is a Professor in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a Research Scientist at the Nashville VA. Dr. Breyer has a background in receptor, biochemistry and physiology and prostaglandin receptor biology in inflammation, diabetes and hypertension. Both diabetes and hypertension are increasing at an alarming rate throughout the population in the US and worldwide and lead to significant end-organ damage including diabetic nephropathy and renal failure. Dr. Breyer has received federal funding to develop and validate novel prostaglandin receptor antagonists as well as developing genetic mouse models of receptor deletion. He has used these models to assess the effects of PG receptors on blood pressure and diet induced obesity in mice. Dr. Breyer has enjoyed mentoring graduate students and post-doctoral fellows and most recently serving as a primary mentor for Maria Kraemer, who received her doctorate in biochemistry and Ryan Ceddia who received his doctorate in pharmacology.
