Professional Bio
Robert J. Lentz, MD, DAABIP, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
He maintains four board certifications in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, critical care medicine, and interventional pulmonology. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society, the American Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology, and the American College of Chest Physicians. He serves on the editorial boards of multiple journals focusing on interventional pulmonology and thoracic oncology.
As an interventional pulmonologist, Dr. Lentz's clinical focus is on advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures involving the airways, lung parenchyma, and pleural space, including navigational and robotic bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, lung and lymph node cryobiopsy, rigid bronchoscopy, ablation/dilation of malignant and benign airway obstructions, airway stent placement, and pleural interventions including medical thoracoscopy. He also maintains a clinical niche in inflammatory post-Histoplasma syndromes including mediastinal granuloma and fibrosing mediastinitis.
Dr. Lentz is an active researcher, with expertise in designing and executing clinical trials involving bronchoscopic and pleural procedures within the productive Vanderbilt Interventional Pulmonary Research (VIPR) group and the multicenter Interventional Pulmonary Outcomes Group (IPOG). He serves as the program director of the interventional pulmonology fellowship program and is integral to the procedural training of general pulmonary/critical care fellows. He also performs and teaches advanced bronchoscopy within the Tennessee Valley Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Nashville.
