Professional Bio
Sumathi K Misra, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Public Health in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She is Associate Director of the Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship Program at VUMC.
She received her master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh, completed her medical residency program at VUMC, and is board certified in Geriatrics, Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM). She has been on faculty since 2000.
Over the past two decades, Dr. Misra’s work has focused on the issues surrounding clinical care, communication surrounding serious illness and the delivery of end-of-life care across the continuum. Through her roles as Founder and Director of the first HPM ACGME Certified Fellowship program in Tennessee and Associate Director for Education and Evaluation and the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), she has created programs at VUMC and the affiliated Veterans Administration Medical Center that are catalysts for curricular innovation and evaluation in medical education and academic program development. She has presented widely and published nationally in these areas.
