Volker Haase, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
He is a physician-scientist with clinical training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, and training in experimental biology and genome editing under Professor Rudolf Jaenisch at the Whitehead Institute. His research focus is on mammalian oxygen sensing, prolyl hydroxylase domain oxygen sensor and HIF biology.
As the Principal Investigator in the Haase Lab, he studies Hypoxia Responses in Physiology and Pathogenesis, particularly hypoxia response pathways and their therapeutic applications.
Dr. Haase is an alumnus of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes, a former Marie Skodowska-Curie fellow and the recipient of the 2006 Sir William Osler Young Investigator award. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and was elected to the Association of American Physicians in 2016. Professor Haase serves the NIH as a standing member of the Pathobiology of Kidney Disease study section.
Professor Haase holds the Krick-Brooks Chair in Nephrology at Vanderbilt University. His research focus is on cellular oxygen sensing mechanisms in the pathogenesis of acute and chronic kidney disease and its complications. Professor Haase is the recipient of the 2006 Sir William Osler Young Investigator award and was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and Association of American Physicians (AAP).
In addition to directing his research group, Dr. Haase provides inpatient care in General Internal Medicine and Nephrology.
