Professional Bio
Colin M. Barker, MD, an international leader in interventional cardiology and percutaneous heart valve therapies, joined Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) as the director of Interventional Cardiology in 2019.
Dr. Barker's clinical interests are interventional cardiology, including percutaneous therapies for coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular disease, structural heart, and percutaneous heart valve therapies as an alternative to open heart surgery or as an option for patients who are not candidates for open heart surgery.
His research centers on clinical trials investigating novel devices to treat heart disease as well as pre-clinical studies evaluating innovative technologies in the cardiovascular space. His research has led to the development of devices to prevent strokes as well as treat patients with congestive heart failure.
Dr. Barker is the principal investigator on several clinical trials investigating novel therapies for coronary artery disease, heart valve disease, and congestive heart failure. He has been awarded funding through the NIH as part of the Clinical and Translational Science Awards Program to evaluate the pharmacogenomics of anti-platelet therapy in patients with heart stents.
He received his medical degree from Boston University and completed his internship and residency training in internal medicine at Vanderbilt. He completed his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the New York University Medical Center and completed advanced training in interventional cardiology, as well as peripheral and endovascular interventions at Scripps Clinic/Green Hospital in La Jolla, California.
For his excellence in clinical interventional cardiology and impactful research, he was awarded the Thomas J. Linnemeier Spirit of Interventional Cardiology Young Investigator Award from the Cardiovascular Research Foundation.
