John T. Loh, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Loh describes his research thusly: The bacterial pathogen Helicobacter pylori colonizes the human gastric mucosa and has been implicated as an essential factor leading to gastritis, duodenal ulcers and gastric adenocarcinoma. Dr. Loh's interests are in investigating pathways that regulate gene expression in this organism. This has included the investigation of two-component signal transduction systems that regulate H. pylori gene expression, and the analysis of factors (e.g. environmental or produced by the host cells) that alter bacterial gene expression. One of his current interests is investigating the impact of environmental salt concentrations on the expression of H. pylori virulence factors. Consumption of high dietary levels of salt is known to contribute to the development of gastric cancer in humans.
