Professional Bio
Jorge L. Gamboa, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology within the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He completed his medical training in Peru and earned his PhD in Physiology from the University of Kentucky. He then moved to Vanderbilt to complete a Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology. Dr. Gamboa's major interest is to understand skeletal muscle biology and health and disease, particularly mitochondrial function and muscle quality. One of the major goals of his research is to understand the role of skeletal muscle mitochondria in sarcopenia and frailty, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease. Dr. Gamboa has been consistently funded by the NIH since 2006. His most recent R01 focus on understanding the response of mitochondria to exercise in patients with chronic kidney disease. He has been invited to participate in grant review panels at the NIH and other funding institutes. He has also been invited as a speaker at national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Gamboa has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and served as a reviewer for more than 15 different journals.
