Professional Bio
Marcela Brissova, PhD, is Research Professor of Medicine in the Division of Diabetes,
Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She is director of Vanderbilt Islet and Pancreas Analysis (IPA) Core, and director of Human Islet Phenotyping Program (HIPP) of Integrated Islet Distribution Program (IIDP).
Dr. Brissova received her PhD from the Slovak University of Technology and did postdoctoral training in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at Vanderbilt University. She is a co-recipient of the John A. Oates Award for Outstanding Contributions to Research with Dr. Alvin C. Powers.
Dr. Brissova's research focuses on the biology of pancreatic islets and pancreas and islet development, especially the development of pancreatic islet vasculature and innervation and their role in regulation of pancreatic islet function. Her research also seeks to understand the regulation of islet cell gene expression to provide insight into processes controlling normal pancreatic beta cell function. She is especially expert in studies on the human pancreas and islets. As director of the NIDDK-funded Human Islet Phenotyping Program, she oversees the phenotyping of all human islet preparations distributed in the United States for research by the NIH-supported IIDP.
