Professional Bio
Maureen Gannon, PhD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
A native of Queens, New York, she received her BS in Biology from Molloy College and her MS in Biology from Adelphi University. She received her PhD in Cell Biology and Anatomy from Cornell University Medical College. Dr. Gannon moved to Nashville in 1996 to pursue postdoctoral training in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at Vanderbilt University. She was recruited to the faculty in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism in 2001. Dr. Gannon holds secondary appointments in the Departments of Molecular Physiology & Biophysics and Cell & Developmental Biology. She became a full professor in 2016.
Research in the Gannon laboratory focuses on the development and regeneration of insulin-producing beta cells. Her research has implications for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes and has been funded by the NIH, JDRF, ADA, and the VA.
Dr. Gannon has held national leadership roles in the American Diabetes Association including chair of the awards committee and chair of the scientific sessions planning committee. She has presented her research at conferences in the US, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
In 2011 Dr. Gannon was appointed Vice Chair for Faculty Development in the Department of Medicine, the first person to hold this position. She was also the inaugural director of the Neilson Society, whose goal is to support the careers of PhD and physician scientist assistant professors on the tenure track within the Department of Medicine as they develop their independent research careers and national reputations. In addition, Dr. Gannon meets with faculty individually for mentoring sessions, career counseling, and assistance with promotion packets. She is well-known on campus for her expertise in facilitating discussions on the topics of Conflict Management and the Imposter Syndrome.
In 2016, Dr. Gannon helped develop, and now directs, a Mid-Career Leadership Development Program for Associate Professor level faculty in the School of Medicine. The goal of this year-long program is to cultivate a pool of well-trained individuals within the institution, providing them with the skills they need to become future leaders of programs and centers.
Dr. Gannon was the 2019 recipient of the Vanderbilt University Thomas A. Hazinski award for effectiveness in mentoring and professional development for faculty. She was appointed the inaugural Associate Dean for Faculty Development at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in September 2019.
