Michael Dunn
Interests

Michael was born and raised in Woodleaf, North Carolina on a farm that has been worked by his family for over 200 years. He never thought that he would go to college as a child, believing that he would do a mix of construction and farming for his career. Though initially reluctant, his parents eventually convinced him to pursue an advanced degree. Michael attended North Carolina State University, earning his bachelor’s degree in biomolecular chemical engineering. After college he worked in both cosmetic and pharmaceutical manufacturing before deciding to apply to medical school. At UNC Michael became a Kenan Rural Scholar and completed several rural health projects, including one on substance use prevention in Pender County, North Carolina. He remains interested in rural health and ultimately plans to open both a gastroenterology and primary care practice upon completing his training. Outside of medicine, Michael pretty much lives outdoors. He enjoys growing plants, playing with heavy machinery, hiking, brewing beer, and working on his old truck and motorcycle that both break down way too much.
