Professional Bio
Patrick J. Hu, MD, PhD, is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Medicine, and Cell and Developmental Biology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is a practicing physician-scientist whose lab uses the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism to study conserved molecular programs that promote stress resistance and homeostasis.
His group has pioneered the use of sensitized genetic screens to identify new conserved modulators of the endoplasmic reticulum unfolded protein response, many of which are mutated in human diseases. His long-term goal is to understand how disruption of homeostatic programs contributes to the pathogenesis of cancer and other diseases.
As director of the Physician-Scientist Training Program/Harrison Society in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Hu oversees the training and development of aspiring physician-scientists who seek to pursue research-based careers in academic medicine. In his role as director of the Office of Medical Student Research at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, he is responsible for the evolution and execution of the Inquiry Program, a unique component of the medical school curriculum that enables each medical student to design and complete a mentored original research project.
