Professional Bio
Rafael Paez, MD, MSCI, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Paez earned his baccalaureate degree in liberal arts with a concentration in biochemistry from Florida Atlantic University Honor's College. He obtained his medical degree at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University in Miami. He then went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Following residency, Dr. Paez completed his clinical fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). Upon completion of his clinical training, Dr. Paez continued his research training at VUMC as a postdoctoral fellow and completed his Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 2023. Dr. Paez is board certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine. He is board eligible in Critical Care medicine and anticipates becoming board certified by the end of 2023. Dr. Paez is a member of the American Thoracic Society, American College of Chest Physicians and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. His clinical and research interests are in thoracic oncology and include the evaluation and management of indeterminate pulmonary nodules, diagnostic devices for pulmonary nodule biopsy, biomarkers for early detection of lung cancer, and pragmatic clinical trials.
