Professional Bio
Shannon Lester, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Public Health, Department of Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
She received a BSE in biomedical engineering at Duke University, where she also competed as a Division I swimmer. She then completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine at VUMC. She remained at Vanderbilt for an additional year as a chief resident and then for palliative care fellowship. She joined VUMC faculty in 2019 doing both primary care and palliative care at the Nashville VA, including precepting residents in primary care clinic, attending on medicine wards, and teaching trainees while on palliative consults.
She has an interest in medical education, mentoring, and wellness including starting the Leadership Retreat for rising PGY2 IM residents and the Safe Faculty Initiative for IM residents to assist with support in the setting of second victim syndrome. She joined the Vanderbilt School of Medicine in 2022 as a college mentor for Robinson College and transitioned to a joint appointment between Vanderbilt and the VA for education and clinical palliative care.
