Professional Bio
Todd W. Rice, M.D., M.Sc., is a Professor of Medicine with tenure in the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Medicine, and Vice President for Clinical Trials Innovation and Operations for the Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical and Translational Research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). Dr. Rice completed internal medicine residency and chief residency at Indiana University School of Medicine and pulmonary and critical care fellowship at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where he also earned a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation degree. He currently serves as the director of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Medical ICU, director of Medical ECMO, and the medical director of Vanderbilt’s Human Research Protections Program (IRB). As a physician scientist, he takes care of critically ill patients as an intensivist in the Vanderbilt Medical Intensive Care Unit and also conducts clinical research in the ICU, specifically in patients with sepsis, ARDS, and acute respiratory failure. Dr. Rice is an established clinical trialist, having designed, conducted, and published numerous practice-changing multicenter clinical trials in critically ill patients. Since 2011, he has spent considerable research time conducting large, pragmatic trials of comparative effectiveness research in critically ill patients as part of the Vanderbilt Learning Healthcare System. Currently, he is the co-director of the Learning Healthcare Systems Platform in Vanderbilt’s Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA). He also serves as the critical care PI for Vanderbilt’s NHLBI funded Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung injury (PETAL) clinical center.
