William Stevenson
Professional Bio
William Stevenson, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Medicine, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He received his MD from Tulane University, completed Medicine and Cardiology training at UCLA Center for the Health Sciences. In 1993 he joined the faculty at Brigham and Women's Hospital where he became Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Director of the Cardiac Arrhythmia Program. In 2017 he was recruited to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Stevneson specializes in the management of cardiac arrhythmias and prevention of sudden death and receives patient referrals from across the U.S. and abroad. His research focuses on the treatment of complex heart rhythm disorders with catheter ablation. His methods of cardiac mapping incorporating pacing techniques to guide catheter ablation are widely used. He has published over 600 articles and chapters. His awards include the Vanderbilt Cardiovascular Medicine Teaching award (2020), the Heart Rhythm Society Distinguished Teacher Award (2018), the Michel Mirowski Lectureship from Johns Hopkins Medical School (2018), the Prystowsky Lectureship from the Heart Rhythm Society (2016), the Michel Mirowski Award for Excellence in Clinical Cardiology and Electrophysiology (2012), and the Thinker Award from the University of Miami (2000). Dr. Stevenson is past president of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Society, and is the founding editor of Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology of the American Heart Association.
