Study: Discovery raises hopes for new cancer therapy

In a study co-led by Ray Blind, PhD (Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism), and colleagues at VUMC and the Sanford Burnham Prebys Discovery Institute, researchers have connected the Hippo pathway to phosphoinositides, a particular type of lipid, or fat molecule, which regulates cell functions that are critical in cancer, obesity and diabetes. The findings were recently published in Science Signaling.

Diabetes Day spotlights achievements, current investigations

The Vanderbilt Diabetes Research and Training Center (DRTC) recently hosted its annual Diabetes Day, where they highlighted recent advancements in the field and recognized young investigators for their research efforts. One of 17 diabetes research centers in the United States, the Vanderbilt DRTC today is comprised of 140 faculty members from 15 departments and three colleges or schools at Vanderbilt and Meharry Medical College who conduct basic, clinical and translational research on the cause, prevention, treatment and complications of diabetes and obesity.

Study shows Vanderbilt-developed technology assists surgeons in identifying parathyroids

A team of surgeons and biomedical engineers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt University (VU) have shown the use of probe-based near infrared autofluorescence (NIRAF) technology helps confirm the identification of parathyroid glands during endocrine surgery, and their findings are part of a multisite trial of the technology now underway.
